The Gift

A man, a woman, a business suite... That is how our play begins. Businessman Ahmet Gür is left head to head with hostess Ayşe because the guest he is waiting for from Japan is three hours late. But is three hours enough to spice up two people's lives?

The exchange of Gifts forges special bonds between people. It cements our existing relationships, and paves the way for new ones. Yakup Almelek analyses the concept of the Gift in this play: is there ever such a thing as a free Gift, no strings attached? If not, what lies hidden at the end of the chain of exchange and reciprocation?

Beyond Betrayal

Betrayal has, in all probability, existed as long as humanity has: it tinges the ebb and flow of life itself, it appears in the pages of religious texts or literary works, it ignites wars mentioned on historical inscriptions or in newspapers today.

In this play, Yakup Almelek starts with the results of betrayal. The play begins with scenes from everyday life, and in the end dredges up the truth lurking beneath all these scenes: a surprisingly tawdry and contentious truth with no single, easy interpretation.

"The Treasury’s in a frightful situation
If someone can save us, he’ll be our salvation..."

The action of this bilingual verse drama unfolds during a fraught period in the Ottoman Empire and centres on the desperate search for a remedy to the economic crisis. The Sultan lives in the lap of luxury and is trying, at the same time, to bring together the brains of the nation to save the state finances in hitherto unimaginable ways. Characters such as the viziers, the Jewish financial whizzkid and the treasurer are in a race to find a solution, and the tableaux created by their out-of-the-ordinary schemes will make you laugh, and will, in a way, remind you of the present day.

Yakup and his wife, Ester, are also the proud owners of The Almelek Art Gallery; which opened in 1988. Through careful publicising of its artists and their work in the media and in print, the gallery, which has always endeavoured to hold high-quality exhibitions of contemporary art, targets as broad an audience as possible for its exhibitions, an audience made up of people from every walk of life.

From January 2008, The Almelek Art Gallery has continued to welcome art-lovers at its new location in Ayşe Sultan Korusu in Bebek.
